Visiting Malang & Blitar - East Java

Picture
Nearly around 3 years ago, I had a chance to visit Malang, second largest city in East Java province, after Surabaya. Malang have cool temperature and was a popular destination for European residents during the period of Dutch colonization. You can find antique buildings/houses easily until now that beautify the city. Even though it was a business trip, I still be able to captured some pictures to share with friends and families.
We stayed at Tugu Hotel Malang, and caught a glimpse of their unique interior. This (third picture down on the left) is a dining room they call it “The Sugar Baron Room”. Taken from memory of a tycoon in sugar industry of Southeast Asia who lived in Java, Oei Tiong Ham (1866-1924). He became one of the wealthiest and most powerful men in Semarang at that time. The black & white portrait on the right was his daughter, Oei Hui Lan.
[Above pictures] And of course you must drop by to Inggil, the local culinary. That’s me and my colleague, Henny.

[Below] From Malang, I went to Blitar, another city, around 73 km from Malang and well-known as the origin of Indonesia’s first president, Soekarno, and where his grave is. Along the journey, I was traveling by car, the scenery of East Java’s nature was breathtaking. Even it was only a small part.
Before we arrived in Blitar we dropped by at Krisik village, around 30 km from Blitar, to this heavenly sanctuary called ‘Rambut Monte’. It’s very peaceful, like a big garden with tall huge trees that have a giant pond in the middle and odd-shaped fish. I wonder what species is that? [Below]

We arrived in Blitar and went directly to hotel Tugu Sri Lestari. It is an antique colonial building that was built in 1850s. Beautiful!

PictureCandi Penataran
Candi Penataran (Penataran temple) is the largest and most important Hindu temple complex in East Java. It lies just 10 km north of Blitar on the lower slopes of mount Kelud. It had said that this temple was dedicated to the Siva and use for at least three hundred years, from the 12th to 15th centuries.

Penataran temple is surrounded by trees that have legendary fruit named Maja. Why legendary? It has connection with the Majapahit empire. Because of the bitterness of the fruit Maja, (Bitter = Pahit), then it was born the name of ‘Majapahit’. -SK-
